Position and role within Covesion

I am a Process Technician involved with the fabrication of devices. My role focuses on Covesion’s proven technologies rather than the product development activities of the business. There is a great deal of overlap as product development needs to be transferred to production and standardised over time.

What are your main areas of expertise?

My interest and academic career have always been in Physics and Maths. I did a Masters degree in Physics with Nanotechnology at the University of Hull for four years. My project was titled ‘Planar restive switching devices using gold nanoislands’ which involved carrying out photolithography whilst working in a cleanroom environment so there were some transferrable skills to my role here at Covesion.

What is your favourite part of your job?

My degree made me realise that I wouldn’t be happy working in an office full time. I like the ‘hands on’ part of the job here at Covesion. That is the person I am, I like the practical side of manufacturing, working in the cleanroom. One of the main reasons that I applied for the job here at Covesion was the opportunity to get involved with manufacturing a product whilst still being involved with a company that works primarily in the Physics sector. I think Covesion is rare in that it combines both of those things.

What has been your career highlight so far?

My degree is my biggest academic achievement to date. However, the hardest thing I have done was my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. Being dropped on a very wet, very windy Welsh hillside for four days and being responsible for hiking to the next waypoint each evening is testing, but great fun! I count myself lucky that the Welsh weather only displayed its true colours for the first two days of the walk, it was practically tropical for the last couple of days! Unfortunately, by this stage everything was already damp and muddy but warm, damp and muddy is better than cold, damp and muddy!

What is your personal background?

I was born and brought up in and around Walsall. At school ‘my thing’ was always Maths and Physics, that was what I enjoyed the most and I was always going to focus on a career path that channelled me down one of those routes. Thinking back I could have gone down more of an engineering path as I love the practicalities of manufacturing rather than the theoretical / research element of Physics, however, I have the best of both worlds here at Covesion.

What do you do outside of work?

My main hobby outside of work is 10M air rifle Shooting, similar to what you see at the Olympics. With moving down to Southampton and getting settled down here that’s had to take a bit of a break, but I am hoping that I can take that up again soon.
